FBI Tips on Preventing Child Identity Theft

Good morning everyone. I’m very excited to announce that we have launched a webcast with the FBI on Child Identity Theft. We have a great group of presenters including, Ramona Warner, Internet Crime Specialist and SSA Leslie D. Hoppey, Supervisory Special Agent both from the FBI’s Cyber Crime Division. On the Debix side we have Katie Hall, OnCall Investigator and Julie Fergerson our VP of Emerging Technologies. They’ll talk about child identity theft and what you can do to help prevent it. I’ve included a brief video to give you an idea of what to expect in the full version.

Thanks for making me think about my childrens financial/credit well being. Never gave alot of thought to their identities being stolen but it makes the most sense since they won’t be “of age” for awhile and the damage that can be done is scary.

Giavanna Henderson Says:

My comment is that most child identity theft starts at home with the parents, whom ruins their child indenity before anyone else. When a child finds out, the police expect that child to prosecute their parent. I believe that is where the FBI should start is within the home. I know of at least 4 victims of child identity theft and it started and ended in the home of these now adult children. How can you ask a parent to watch out for their children identy if they are the one that are doing the stealing?

Alan R Pomeroy Says:

As you I will always take interest in crime such as this it is very hard to get your credit back on track that has been through this just image that this happening to a innocent child. I would love to help keep get this out the America thanks again for sharing econimic petty crime from others that will crush a young child.

In response to Kortney’s question, the best way to find out if your child is a victim of identity theft would be either to follow the instructions on ChildrensCreditCrisis.org or to enroll your child in Debix ChildScan protection for $20 per year.

Marie Brown Says:

I appreciate your information and will surely check my child’s credit report to insure that no identity theft has occurred. And I will keep your contract information handy.

Bo Says:

In response to Giavanna’s question, the Identity Theft Resource Center reports that a parent is the culprit in 30% of the child cases. There is little hope of stopping a parent from abusing their child’s identity if they are so inclined.
